Report by Maike Julia Metzen

In October 2003, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in its 32nd General Assembly, adopted the Convention on Cultural Heritage, including Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). The latter includes traditional practices, traditional craftsmanship, as well as knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe. The convention entered into force in 2006 and provides the possibility for organizations to register their practice or tradition should it fulfill the following criteria:

  • practice is being actively transferred; passed on from human to human
  • dynamic cultural heritage, includes a clear outlook for further development in the future
  • fostering a feeling of belonging and includes civil society

As a first step towards the adoption of a Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe the Commission published on 2nd of July a roadmap, inviting interested citizens and stakeholders to share their views on the Strategy. Scheduled to be adopted before the end of the year, the overall objective of the Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe is to help ensure Europe's supply of safe and affordable medicines and support the European pharmaceutical industry to remain an innovator and world leader.

Stella Kyriakides, Commissioner in charge of Health & Food Safety, said:

“By the end of the year, I will present an ambitious Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe to ensure affordability, sustainability and security of supply. The coronavirus pandemic has showed us more than ever that we need to have a crisis-resistant system and the means to produce medicine within the EU to ensure timely access to essential medicines for our citizens and hospitals in all circumstances.”

Citizens, experts and stakeholders are invited to give, until 7 July 2020, their feedback to the roadmap through the Better Regulation Portal and consult the dedicated website for additional information and to follow updates. This roadmap will be followed by a public consultation.

New MEP Interest Group on AMR launched today will push for more European cooperation to stop antimicrobial resistance

Brussels, 19 February 2020. “Antimicrobial resistance is one of the top ten global public health threats we currently face. Taking effective action to tackle it is one of the Commission’s key priorities in the area of health, and I am looking forward to working closely with the European Parliament to this effect in the coming years. Together we can form a strong alliance in the fight against antimicrobial resistance and bring change.” said European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, in her opening address at the launch of the MEP Interest Group on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) at the European Parliament in Brussels today.

Traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) is an important and often underestimated health resource with many applications, especially in the prevention and management of lifestyle-related chronic diseases, and in meeting the health needs of ageing populations. Many countries are seeking to expand coverage of essential health services at a time when consumer expectations for care are rising, costs are soaring, and most budgets are either stagnant or being reduced. Given the unique health challenges of the 21st century, interest in T&CM is undergoing a revival.

After Germany in early January, at the beginning of February Belgium became the second European member state to reach its required threshold!

Two countries have reached the threshold!

After Germany in early January, at the beginning of February Belgium became the second European member state to reach its required threshold! The number of signatures in these countries for the Save Bees and Farmers ECI reached the respective thresholds, namely 72.000 for Germany and 15.750 for Belgium. A minimum of 7 countries crossing their respective thresholds is required in addition to the one million validated signatures, in order for the ECI to be considered successful and for it to be officially accepted by the European Commission.
The aim of our Initiative is to obtain a paradigm shift in European agriculture towards a model that meets the needs of the environment, farmers and citizens alike, where all can thrive together.
Across the EU, we want to collect at least one million signatures for a bee-friendly agriculture and a healthy environment. We have until the end of September 2020 to collect signatures in all 27 EU Member States.

You can sign the ECI online or on printed paper forms.
